They run bolt patterns that aren’t commonly found on modern vehicles, which means you can’t just grab any wheel off the shelf and expect it to bolt up. Here’s a quick breakdown of what you need to know. The Two Main VW Bolt Patterns Classic VW models run one of two bolt patterns depending on the year and model. 5x205 PCD (Wide Five) — This is the original bolt pattern used on the earliest aircooled VW models. If your car still has its original drum brakes, there’s a good chance this is what you’re working with. It’s found on the VW Beetle (Type 1), VW Splitscreen and Bay Window Bus (T1 & T2), VW Karmann Ghia, VW Type 3, and the VW 181 Thing. 4x130 PCD — Volkswagen moved to this four-stud pattern from the late 1960s onwards as brake systems were updated. You’ll find it on the VW Beetle (1968–1979), VW Super Beetle (1971–1979), VW Karmann Ghia (1967–1974), VW Type 3 (1968–1973), and the VW Thing (1973–1974). If you’re not 100% sure which pattern your car has, it’s always worth double-checking before ordering — especially on cars that have had brake conversions over the years.
